Sui Fixes Bugs Behind Multiple Blockchain Shutdowns

Sui Network fixed the bugs behind three outages in May 2026. Validators restored operations after more than 15 hours of downtime.

The Sui Network is back online after fixing the bugs that caused three outages last week. The issues occurred on the 28th and 29th of May 2026. The outages combined to bring the blockchain down for over 15 hours. The Sui Core Team released fixes after an investigation and explained what went wrong.

Sui Network Faces Three Outages in Two Days

The first outage happened on May 28. It lasted 6 hours and 44 minutes. During that period, the network was not mining blocks. This meant that users were unable to make new transactions.

The Sui Core Team states that a bug in the v1.72 software update caused the problem. This update added a new address balance feature. It did, however, cause a problem in the gas charging system.

Due to the bug, validators went into a crash loop. As a result, the network no longer functioned properly. The team quickly began searching for a solution.

Developers released a temporary fix to restore services. But they were aware of the slight possibility of a mistake. Despite this, they chose to do so as the network was already down.

The temporary solution seemed to be successful initially. But another problem came up on the morning of May 29. This caused a second outage in the Sui blockchain network.

Later that day, Sui experienced a third outage. This problem occurred during a scheduled epoch change. At that time, validators were restarting systems to install the latest fix.

The team discovered another secret bug. This bug affected how validators stored randomness data during restarts. As a result, the network was once again suspended until engineers could fix the problem.

Validators Restore Operations and Plan Improvements

The first outage started around 7:00 a.m. PT on May 28. It ended around 1:30 p.m. PT. The second outage started around 5:00 a.m. PT on May 29 and ended around 8:30 a.m. PT.

Meanwhile, the third outage began around 1:30 p.m. PT. It lasted until about 7:20 p.m. PT. Therefore, users experienced several interruptions across two days.

Despite the outages, user funds remained safe. The network also did not reverse any transactions that were already completed. This helped users to avoid financial losses.

The Sui Core Team has done a full review after the incidents. The team found that there were some areas of the network that were weak. Therefore, developers are now working on additional improvements.

AI tools also aided in the investigation, the foundation said. AI systems were used to analyze logs and gather network information. Consequently, the team identified the causes faster.

The outages also had an impact on the SUI token price. During the past week, the token fell about 17%. According to CoinGecko data, SUI is currently trading near $0.88.

As of now, both big bugs have been patched by validators. Network activity has returned to normal. In addition, all systems are functioning as normal.

The Sui Foundation will continue to enhance network stability in the future. It also desires to enhance protections when software is updated and validators are restarted. The team is therefore hoping to avoid such outages in the future.
