Barcelona inaugurates a new data center hosting CoreWeave’s AI platform, aiming to transform the city into a digital hub with sustainable and efficient infrastructure.

Barcelona’s New AI Infrastructure

The city of Barcelona has taken a significant step in its digital transformation journey with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art data center. This facility is set to host CoreWeave’s advanced AI cloud platform, positioning the city as a key player in the European AI landscape. The launch event was graced by the presence of Barcelona’s Mayor, Jaume Collboni, and Albert Tort, Secretary of Telecommunications and Digital Transformation of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

CoreWeave and MERLIN Edged Partnership

CoreWeave Inc, a leading AI cloud platform provider, has partnered with MERLIN Edged to establish one of the first large-scale NVIDIA Hopper training and inference supercomputers in Spain. This initiative is part of CoreWeave’s broader $2.2 billion investment across Europe, aimed at enhancing AI capabilities with 100% renewable energy.

The new 15MW data center in Barcelona is equipped with 10,224 NVIDIA H200 Tensor Core GPUs, featuring InfiniBand connectivity. Plans are underway to expand with a Blackwell supercomputer by 2026, further boosting computing capacity across southern Europe.

Sustainable Digital Infrastructure

MERLIN Properties and Edged Energy, who formed MERLIN Edged in 2020, are at the forefront of sustainable digital infrastructure. Their data centers boast zero water consumption and high efficiency, with a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.15, significantly lower than the European and global averages. These centers operate entirely on renewable energy, aligning with CoreWeave’s commitment to sustainability.

Strategic Importance for Catalonia

The partnership between CoreWeave and MERLIN Edged is pivotal for Catalonia’s ambition to become a leading AI hub in Europe. The region’s robust fiber network and renewable energy resources make it an attractive location for global tech companies. The new data center also connects to the Barcelona Cable Landing Station, facilitating global market access through high-speed subsea cables.

Key Statements from Leaders

Mayor Jaume Collboni highlighted the initiative’s role in transforming Barcelona into a Mediterranean digital port and a benchmark for technological innovation. MHP Salvador Illa, President of the Generalitat de Catalunya, expressed confidence in the region’s potential to lead in AI advancements.

Mike Mattacola, GM, International at CoreWeave, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, emphasizing the project’s alignment with the company’s sustainability goals. Ismael Clemente, CEO of MERLIN Properties, and Jakob Carnemark, founder of Edged Energy, echoed these sentiments, underscoring the strategic advantages of the region’s infrastructure.
