Compass Coffee has become the first Square seller in the world to integrate Bitcoin payments directly into its in-store register system, according to company founder and CEO Michael Haft.
Today @CompassCoffeeDC became the first @Square seller in the world to accept Bitcoin integrated with the register. Huge thanks to our friends from the @BTCDistrict who stopped by to help us put it through its paces. pic.twitter.com/SI5MdyTznI

In a post shared on X, Haft announced that the Washington, D.C.–based coffee chain successfully tested Bitcoin Lightning payments using ten different wallets, including Cash App, Wallet of Satoshi, Strike, Zeus, and Phoenix Wallet.
“We tested Lightning payments from 10 different wallets—fast, reliable, and honestly pretty fun. All went through instantly,” Haft wrote.
The integration was developed in collaboration with Square and the Bitcoin community group BTC District, which assisted in testing the system.
The new feature allows Compass Coffee to process Bitcoin transactions alongside its traditional credit card and cash systems, using the same Square register interface it has relied on for over a decade.
Haft emphasized the simplicity of the setup, noting that Square’s new functionality lets small businesses configure a Bitcoin wallet and begin accepting payments within minutes, fully integrated with their existing inventory and accounting systems.
“Paying with Bitcoin isn’t new. What’s new is how seamless Square made it for a neighborhood business like ours,” he said.
He credited Square’s team for making Bitcoin a practical option for everyday commerce: “Enormous credit to the Square team for making Bitcoin a practical medium of exchange for small businesses—simple, secure, and ready for everyday use.”
Haft said the update marks a turning point in everyday Bitcoin payments.
“For years, the idea of buying a cup of coffee with Bitcoin was the go-to example of mainstream adoption. But until now, the reality was clunky—businesses had to run a separate system, disconnected from inventory, accounting, and daily operations.”
Square co-founder Jack Dorsey, who also leads Block, amplified the announcement by retweeting a video of Haft with a single word: “boom.”
