Elon Musk’s Grok Bot Has a $1 Million Domain Problem

The anonymous owner of the grok.bot domain has turned the web address into an open letter directed at xAI, demanding $1 million following the launch of Elon Musk's product with the same name. The pitch gained viral attention on social media.

A $1 Million Ask and a Personal Plea

The landing page features a neon ticket graphic branding the address as a lottery win and includes a disclaimer noting that the owner has no ties to Musk's company. The seller claims the purchase was driven by pure chance because of a preference for .bot addresses, offering the space.bot domain as a bonus.

In the open letter, the seller states that the purchase occurred one month before xAI launched Grok Bot on X. The pitch also includes personal details, with the owner citing heavy trading losses in crypto and a baby on the way, while promising to quit meme coins if xAI pays the $1 million marketing spend.

Timeline Discrepancies and Domain Leverage

Public WHOIS records contradict the seller's timeline, showing the domain was purchased on January 20, 2026. xAI announced its Grok Bot artificial intelligence agents on August 11, 2026, creating a seven-month gap rather than the claimed one month. The domain is registered with Spaceship, and the owner uses a privacy service based in Iceland.

Additionally, xAI operates its chatbot at grok.com, leaving the .bot extension as an optional extra rather than a necessity. Trademark owners also have legal avenues under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP), where complaints start at $1,500.

Neither Musk nor xAI has publicly responded to the offer.
