GitHub now offers a free Foundations Certification for students verified through GitHub Education, promoting skill development in collaboration and version control.

GitHub has announced a significant initiative to support students by waiving the exam fee for its GitHub Foundations Certification for those verified through GitHub Education, according to GitHub’s official blog. This move is part of GitHub’s ongoing efforts to empower students to develop skills in collaboration, version control, and other essential software development practices without financial burden.

GitHub Foundations Certification

The GitHub Foundations certification program is tailored for newcomers to the GitHub platform, focusing on core concepts such as repository management, commits, branching, merging, and project management. It also covers contributions to open-source projects and markdown usage. More details about the curriculum are available on GitHub’s educational platform, providing an extensive pathway for learners.

How to Get Started

Step 1: Get Verified

Students aged 13 or older, enrolled in a degree or diploma-granting course, are eligible for the GitHub Student Developer Pack. Verification involves filling out an application on GitHub’s education page, demonstrating current enrollment. The process is straightforward, with guidance provided throughout.

Step 2: Prepare for Your Exam

The exam covers foundational topics of collaborating and working on GitHub. Preparation resources, including study guides and FAQs, are available through the GitHub Foundations Experience. Students can review these materials before attempting the exam.

Step 3: Take the Exam

Students can register for the non-proctored exam through GitHub’s testing provider, PSI. The exam, available 24/7, can be taken at the student’s convenience within 60 days of registration. If unable to complete the exam in this period, students can cancel without penalty.

Step 4: Get Your Credential

Upon passing the exam, students receive a digital badge from Credly, which can be shared on platforms like LinkedIn or Facebook, enhancing their professional profile.

Join the GitHub Education Community

GitHub Education offers more than just certification. Verified students gain access to tools like GitHub Copilot for AI-powered coding suggestions and a GitHub Pro account with advanced features. Students also join a global community, participating in events such as hackathons and GitHub Field Days, enriching their learning experience.
