Linea introduces a 100% Ethereum-equivalent zkEVM rollup, enhancing scalability while maintaining Ethereum’s core principles. Discover how Linea aligns with Ethereum’s vision.

Linea, a new player in the blockchain ecosystem, is making waves as a unique Ethereum-equivalent Layer 2 network. The platform is designed to enhance Ethereum’s scalability without compromising its core principles, according to Linea’s official blog.

Linea’s Ethereum-Centric Approach

Developed by contributors to Ethereum’s original architecture, Linea maintains strict adherence to Ethereum’s foundational principles. Unlike other Layer 2 solutions that modify Ethereum’s Virtual Machine (EVM) or introduce new governance structures, Linea retains the EVM in its original form and uses ETH as its native gas token. This commitment ensures that Linea aligns closely with Ethereum’s broader ecosystem and strengthens its network while addressing scalability challenges.

Understanding Ethereum Equivalence

Linea’s Ethereum equivalence is characterized by executing operations with the same accuracy as the Ethereum mainnet. This includes maintaining identical gas costs and opcode behaviors, allowing developers to deploy smart contracts on Linea with confidence that they will perform as expected on Ethereum. This equivalence is crucial, as it simplifies development processes and ensures consistent performance across platforms.

Technical Innovations: Direct Arithmetization and Vortex

Linea employs direct arithmetization, a method that directly encodes EVM operations into mathematical circuits, enhancing performance and efficiency. This approach avoids the inefficiencies associated with zkVMs that rely on RISC-V instruction sets. Additionally, Linea utilizes Vortex, an in-house STARK-based proof system, to achieve high throughput and scalability. Vortex outperforms traditional STARK-based systems, offering significant performance advantages crucial for maintaining Ethereum equivalence.

Maintaining Upgrade Parity with Ethereum

Linea is committed to staying up-to-date with Ethereum’s latest upgrades. By September, Linea will incorporate all recent EVM enhancements, including those from the Prague/Electra upgrade. This ensures developers can deploy the same smart contracts across Ethereum and Linea without modifications, benefiting from reduced gas costs and advanced wallet capabilities.

Tokenomics and Ecosystem Alignment

Linea’s tokenomics model is designed to reinforce Ethereum’s value directly. Twenty percent of net income from gas fees is allocated to buying and burning ETH, reducing its supply and enhancing its utility as Ethereum’s native token. The remaining income is used to burn LINEA tokens, creating a sustainable cycle that enhances scarcity and long-term utility.

Linea’s approach offers a compelling solution for those invested in Ethereum’s future, ensuring alignment with its vision while extending its capabilities. For more technical insights and to start building on Linea, explore their documentation.
