OKX bars staff in Hong Kong from using Anthropic’s Claude AI after account suspension scare

OKX told its Hong Kong-based employees to stop using Anthropic’s Claude AI in early August 2026, a move triggered by something no company wants to experience: waking up to find your corporate AI account temporarily suspended.

The crypto exchange’s Anthropic account has since been restored, but OKX isn’t taking any more chances. Staff in Hong Kong or traveling through China must now rely on alternative AI tools.

Why the suspension happened

The root cause traces back to September 2025, when Anthropic updated its terms of service with a provision that reads like a geopolitical tripwire. Companies with more than 50% ownership linked to unsupported jurisdictions, a category that effectively includes China, are prohibited from using Claude AI.

The account restoration suggests OKX’s corporate structure didn’t ultimately violate the ownership threshold. But the suspension was apparently enough of a jolt to prompt a blanket internal policy: if you’re in Hong Kong or mainland China, Claude is off limits. Neither OKX nor Anthropic has issued official comments on the incident.

OKX isn’t alone in this

Goldman Sachs restricted its Hong Kong staff from accessing Claude in late April 2026. JPMorgan followed suit in June 2026. Now OKX has joined the club in August. Three major financial institutions, three months in a row, all arriving at the same conclusion.

Reports indicate that OKX hasn’t experienced significant operational impacts from the switch.
