The project, led by Fulgur Ventures Japan, aims to support Bitcoin adoption and reestablish Tokyo’s role as a major center for Bitcoin development and activity.
The initiative follows the Bitcoin Tokyo 2024 conference, hosted by Fulgur Ventures in September, which marked Japan’s first Bitcoin-only event.
At the conference, the group announced plans for a physical space dedicated to Bitcoin-related companies and community-building efforts.
Tokyo previously held a leading position in the Bitcoin ecosystem, hosting the world’s first Bitcoin meetup in 2011 and serving as the headquarters for the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange at the time.
By 2017, Tokyo accounted for 56% of global Bitcoin trading volume. However, the local Bitcoin community fragmented following the blocksize war and a series of major exchange hacks.
Interest in Bitcoin further declined after the Japanese government's promotion of web3 technologies in 2023, when Bitcoin was increasingly seen as a government-sanctioned risk rather than an opportunity.
The Tokyo Bitcoin Base facility, located near Yotsuya Station, spans approximately 1,300 square meters and will serve several functions:
- Shared offices for Bitcoin-focused companies, including Blockstream, Mempool, BTCPay, PlanB Network, Fulgur Ventures, Agile Energy X, and Diamond Hands
- Coworking spaces for individuals and startups
- Event and conference areas
- A Bitcoin education and outreach center
- A public relations and media contact point for Bitcoin-related activities
- A community space for both local and visiting Bitcoiners to collaborate
The current opening represents the first phase of the project. A planned second phase will add accommodation facilities for Bitcoin developers and entrepreneurs.
These spaces will allow visitors to stay in Tokyo for extended periods and build partnerships with local companies. Land acquisition for these facilities is currently in progress.
