0.7 Bitcoin Now Tops 1 Billion Rupiah as Indonesia's Currency Slides

Just 0.7 bitcoin is now worth more than 1 billion Indonesian rupiah, as the country's currency hovers near IDR 18,000 per dollar. Crypto commentator Ash Crypto noted on X that with the dollar-rupiah rate around 17,995, 0.7 BTC converts to roughly IDR 1.04 billion, or about $58,000 at a bitcoin price near $82,700.

The milestone reflects two parallel trends: bitcoin has held above $80,000 for weeks, while the rupiah has spent most of 2026 setting fresh lows.

How the Rupiah Got Here

The currency's decline has been steady rather than sudden. On May 4, IDNFinancials reported that the rupiah closed at a record IDR 17,394 per dollar, a 4.28% depreciation from IDR 16,687 at the start of the year. One month later, on June 4, the currency broke through the 18,000 per dollar mark for the first time.

Local analysts viewed the move as more than a market wobble. Liza Camelia Suryanata of Kiwoom Sekuritas Indonesia warned that the move past 17,300 was "a signal that macroeconomic fundamentals are under pressure," and said the government's 8% growth target had become "highly unrealistic." The same report noted that Bank Indonesia held its benchmark rate at 4.75% on April 22, which bought the currency only two days back below 17,300.

From 16,687 to about 18,000 represents a loss of nearly 8% against the dollar in under 10 months. Over the same stretch, a rupiah saver who held bitcoin instead was measuring wealth in a unit that did not answer to Jakarta's trade balance.

Historical price data shows bitcoin opening the year near $87,575, or about IDR 1.46 billion. Measured in dollars, bitcoin's price is down roughly 5.5% year to date; however, when set against the rupiah, it is up close to 2%, because the currency fell faster than the coin.

Indonesians Are Paying Close Attention

Indonesia is not a fringe crypto market. The Financial Services Authority (OJK) revealed that 23.21 million accounts were trading crypto during August alone. Transaction values were also climbing across the country at a 12.87% rate month-on-month, rising to IDR 23.16 trillion.

That base gives the rupiah's slide a direct crypto audience. Every leg lower in the currency raises the local-currency value of bitcoin held on those exchanges, which is exactly the kind of chart that circulates fast on social media in a market of more than 23 million accounts.
