Dormant bitcoin wallets have stirred to life in September, with approximately 3,790 vintage BTC moving from addresses created between 2010 and 2017. On Monday at block height 966937, a whale wallet first created in 2013 transferred 113 BTC, worth around $8.8 million, for the first time since the address was funded.
The wallet that moved on Monday was created on September 27, 2013, when bitcoin was trading around $128 per coin. The 113 BTC held in that address was originally valued at approximately $14,464 at the time of its acquisition.
September's activity trails August's record dormant supply movements. Last month saw 6,427.59 BTC, valued at more than half a billion U.S. dollars, move for the first time in years. With two weeks remaining in September, the month could potentially match or exceed August's total.
Weekend Concentration of Transfers
The most significant dormant transfer this month occurred on September 6, when a wallet created on July 9, 2016 shifted 1,260.776 BTC. This single transaction accounted for approximately one-third of September's dormant BTC volume so far.
Weekend activity has dominated the month's dormant coin movements, with 62% of transfers occurring on Saturdays and Sundays. An ancient cluster of unspent transaction outputs from 2010 shifted around 600 BTC on September 5, a Saturday.
Across all September transfers measured, dormant BTC averaged approximately 13 years of inactivity. The concentration of weekend activity suggests these movements may be deliberate rather than reactions to spontaneous market movements, though the analysis does not definitively explain the motivations behind individual transfers.
