A16z Crypto Rebrands as A16z Frontier, Expands Focus Beyond Blockchains

Andreessen Horowitz’s crypto fund has a new name and a broader mandate. On October 22, 2026, the firm unveiled a16z Frontier, the successor to a16z Crypto, which will back what it calls “frontier startups.”

The fund says it will continue investing in blockchain projects and pushing regulatory advocacy, while adding new focus areas.

What changed, and what didn’t

The rebrand is being led by Chris Dixon, alongside Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet.

The new focus areas are wide. The fund lists AI, autonomous machines, full-stack companies that build both hardware and software, and new networks connecting humans and AI.

The money is substantial. A16z Frontier raised approximately $2.2 billion in its most recent vehicle. That brings the total to about $10 billion raised across five funds since the strategy began.

For context on the track record, the crypto fund’s past bets include Coinbase, Solana and Uniswap. Those names cover an exchange, a layer-1 blockchain and a decentralized trading protocol.

The AI thesis behind the rename

The core argument in the announcement is about speed. A16z pointed to a widening gap between AI-native startups and traditional incumbents, suggesting that AI could pull the development of frontier technologies forward by decades.

The crypto piece of the thesis fits into this picture rather than sitting beside it. The fund is keeping its commitment to blockchain infrastructure, including the use of stablecoins in communications between machines. That points toward a future of machine networks, where software agents and devices transact with each other directly.

Stablecoins, which are digital tokens pegged to a currency like the dollar, are one candidate for that payment rail. A16z is betting that crypto becomes the plumbing for this machine economy rather than a separate sector.

Why a crypto fund would drop “crypto” from its name

The Frontier label tells founders working in previously unaddressed domains that they are in scope, removing friction for founders building autonomous robots or full-stack hardware companies who might have assumed a16z Crypto was the wrong door.

It also reflects how blurry the line between crypto and conventional tech has become. Stablecoins are increasingly discussed as infrastructure rather than speculation. AI agents are being designed to act on their own.

What this means for founders, crypto and rival investors

For crypto founders, the near-term message is reassuring. The team, the regulatory advocacy and the investment commitment remain in place. A fund with roughly $2.2 billion in fresh capital is still a major source of funding for blockchain projects, especially ones that tie into AI or machine payments.

For the stablecoin sector, the endorsement of machine-to-machine payments as a core use case adds a large, well-known investor to the camp arguing that stablecoins have a role beyond trading and remittances.
