AAVE falls below $150 despite Citi Research's bullish tokenized finance outlook

AAVE traded below $150 on Wednesday, even as Citi Research highlighted Aave as a leading collateral mobility protocol for tokenized capital markets. The report described Aave as one of the most significant real-world use cases for tokenized finance.

Citi Research's assessment

According to the report, Aave V4 has bridged collateral, liquidity, and financing, positioning it as a decentralized prime brokerage. Citi Research said Aave can now take on functions that move tens of trillions of dollars in traditional finance, and could become the go-to layer for financing tokenized assets once they move on-chain.

Stani Kulechov, Founder and CEO of Aave, praised the report, saying it offers a great overview of where the future of finance is going. He added that Aave is building the backbone of all future finance.

Borrowing growth and recovery

Kulechov also pointed to stock borrowing as a major growth area. Responding to reports that stocks have continued to grow, reaching $15 million, he noted that Aave is already a multi-million dollar market for borrowing. He stated that as more stocks move on-chain, this becomes a $200 trillion plus opportunity.

Despite that optimism, active loans in the Aave protocol have struggled to recover from the April security incident. Active loans remain well below the $18 billion recorded in April. After dropping to $9 billion, the figure has since rebounded to $12 billion.

Capital also continues to flow into the protocol. Between October 19 and 20, the protocol recorded over $213 million in USD inflows, suggesting increased demand.

Market response

Despite its growing influence within DeFi, AAVE has shown relative weakness on the charts. Since facing rejection at $187 two weeks ago, AAVE has held within a descending channel. The altcoin breached the $150 support and plunged to $148 at press time.

The price decline indicates that the market has yet to reflect the growing optimism around Aave borrowing or its role in finance. In the short term, if Citi Research's spotlight incentivizes investors to return, a rebound towards $175 could occur. However, if the current direction persists, the altcoin is likely to breach $140 with a potential drop to $134.

Final summary

  • Citi Research spotlights Aave as the leading collateral mobility protocol for tokenized capital markets.
  • Aave is projected to attract over $200 trillion in stock borrowing, as active loans recover from the April incident.
