Chainlink announced that its weekend pricing service will be used by Aave Horizon, the institutional lending arm of Aave, to provide continuous reference prices for tokenized stock collateral. The service, launched on October 29, initially covers high‑volume U.S. equities.
How the weekend reference works
During regular market hours Chainlink’s 24/7 feeds rely on weekday price data. When the underlying stock market closes, the feed draws quotes from multiple perpetual‑futures venues, where derivatives linked to the same assets continue trading. The aggregated price reflects these derivative markets rather than trades on the closed exchange.
Chainlink filters out stale inputs, limits the impact of outliers, and merges the different sessions into a single continuous series that is delivered to on‑chain data feeds for lending protocols.
Implications for borrowers and lenders
For borrowers, a moving reference price can affect collateral calculations. If the weekend price declines, the loan‑to‑value ratio may fall below the liquidation threshold before the stock market reopens, potentially triggering liquidation earlier than under a static weekend price.
Stablecoin lenders benefit from earlier visibility of deteriorating collateral, although actual debt recovery still depends on the ability to liquidate the underlying assets. The oracle price alone does not guarantee a buyer or redemption mechanism.
Details on Horizon’s configuration
Horizon is a separate, permissioned instance of Aave. Only qualified, allowlisted participants may supply tokenized real‑world assets and borrow against them. Its stablecoin pools accept liquidity in USDC, RLUSD and GHO. Specific collateral requirements and liquidation thresholds are set per asset.
The announcement did not disclose which equity tokens, feed addresses, or liquidation parameters will be used initially. Horizon’s documentation mentions bounds on issuer‑reported net asset values that reject out‑of‑range updates and retain the last valid price, but it does not clarify how these safeguards apply to the new weekend feeds.
Relation to Aave’s other equity offerings
The Horizon implementation is separate from Aave’s V4 Equities Hub on Base, which previously held the last price over weekends for a set of Coinbase‑listed stock tokens. The Horizon announcement does not indicate any change to that configuration.
