Aave's two tracked Ethereum V3 stablecoin backstops shrank by $12.4 million between mid-September and mid-October, declining from $128.52 million to $116.09 million, a 9.67% reduction. The positions comprise USDC and USDT stakes in Umbrella, Aave's system for absorbing lending deficits using staked capital.
The decline occurred despite higher reward rates. The USDC position's extra reward rate rose from 1.66% to 1.82%, while the USDT rate increased from 1.46% to 1.63%. Underlying lending yields also moved higher: USDC's base rate rose from approximately 3.60% to 3.77%, and USDT's increased from about 3.02% to 3.12%.
According to DefiLlama tracking, USDC holdings decreased from $58.74 million to $53.44 million, a reduction of $5.30 million. USDT positions fell from $69.78 million to $62.66 million, a decline of $7.13 million.
The balance movements reflect changes in both asset valuations and deposit amounts. The measured declines cannot alone distinguish between user withdrawals and asset revaluation effects.
Despite smaller total capital, the annualized reward amount remained relatively stable. Multiplying each position's dollar value by its extra reward rate produced approximately $1.99 million in annualized compensation at both observation points.
Aave's reward mechanism can increase per-unit rates with smaller aggregate capital through its emission curve structure. When total staked capital falls relative to a configured target, the same reward pool distributes across fewer stakes, raising the percentage rate per unit of capital. A September proposal from TokenLogic sought to renew reward allowances while maintaining existing emission rates and parameters through December 2, 2026.
Umbrella participants earn both underlying lending yield and additional rewards for accepting the risk that their stakes could be used to cover reserve deficits. The protocol enforces a 20-day cooldown period followed by a two-day withdrawal window, during which rewards continue accruing and slashing risk remains active.
