Aerodrome, a decentralized exchange operating on Coinbase's Base network, has emerged as the dominant player in onchain spot trading, capturing roughly half of all onchain foreign exchange activity in the first half of 2026. The protocol crossed $2 billion in spot FX volume by June 2026, surpassing the combined volume of over 700 other decentralized exchanges.
Market Dominance
In Q2 2026, Aerodrome accounted for over 50% of all onchain FX spot trading volume, outpacing its nearest competitor. During July 2026, the exchange captured 54% of BTC-USD spot volume across all EVM-compatible decentralized exchanges. By that same month, Aerodrome's cumulative trading volume had surpassed $400 billion.
On its home chain, Aerodrome consistently maintains between 50% and 63% of all DEX volume on Base, largely powered by Slipstream, its concentrated liquidity engine. Uniswap recorded approximately 34% of onchain FX volume during Q2 2026.
Protocol Design and Revenue Model
Aerodrome launched in August 2023 using a ve(3,3) vote-escrow model, a mechanism where token holders lock AERO governance tokens in exchange for voting power over how liquidity incentives are distributed. Voters direct emissions toward specific trading pairs, with those receiving the most votes attracting the deepest liquidity.
The protocol operates a zero-leak economy, directing 100% of protocol revenue to liquidity providers and veAERO voters, with no treasury allocation or foundation fees. Every basis point of trading fees flows to capital providers or governance participants.
Liquidity Concentration Mechanics
Slipstream, Aerodrome's concentrated liquidity engine, allows liquidity providers to focus their capital around price points where actual trading occurs, rather than spreading capital evenly across all possible price ranges as traditional automated market makers do. This design contributes to the protocol's competitive efficiency.
