AI Model Resolves Decades-Old NSA Cryptography Mystery, Reignites Bitcoin Security Debate

Anthropic announced that its Claude AI model resolved a longstanding cryptographic mystery in less than 30 minutes, determining the origin of numbers embedded in widely-used encryption standards and reigniting discussion about Bitcoin's security choices.

The controversy centered on elliptic curves, mathematical rules used to verify digital signatures without exposing private keys. In 2000, the US standards body NIST adopted several curves that included starting numbers supplied by the NSA, but their origin was never disclosed. Researchers had long feared the agency might have deliberately selected them to create hidden weaknesses, or backdoors.

Claude traced five sets of numbers to an ordinary computer program that generated random-looking values using clock times from 1997 and 1998. The values can now be independently reproduced. Anthropic stated that the finding "makes us more confident the curves were chosen without any backdoors or intentional weaknesses." The discovery earned a $36,864 bounty directed to charity.

Some questions persist about why certain numbers were skipped. The discovery reduces the likelihood of deliberate manipulation without eliminating it entirely.

Bitcoin's Alternative Approach

Bitcoin uses a different curve called secp256k1, designed with simple, publicly understood numbers that leave little room to conceal suspicious choices. Satoshi Nakamoto never publicly explained the rationale for this selection.

After Edward Snowden's 2013 leaks exposed NSA efforts to weaken a separate encryption standard, Bitcoin's approach gained credibility among industry participants. Ledger co-founder Nicolas Bacca argued the approach represented a decisive move away from NSA curves.

Blockstream CEO Adam Back responded by emphasizing that the NSA's failure to disclose how its curves were generated created the suspicion in the first place.

For Bitcoin holders, Claude's findings carry a straightforward implication: no weakness was found in Bitcoin's underlying cryptography, which remains secure against known practical attacks.

The broader long-term concern for both Bitcoin and traditional cryptographic systems remains quantum computing, which could eventually threaten current encryption methods.
