Algorand announced that it leads the blockchain industry in post-quantum transactions, having recorded over 2.7 million post-quantum secure transfers on its mainnet. According to the network, these transactions would remain secure against potential functional quantum computers.
To achieve full post-quantum security, a blockchain must secure multiple layers of its stack, including wallet addresses, consensus mechanisms, and price oracles. Algorand currently utilizes a hybrid model that supports both classical elliptic curve cryptography and post-quantum signatures for transactions, cross-chain communication, and wallets, allowing users to migrate gradually.
Post-Quantum Readiness Comparisons
As of September, Algorand received a 'C' grade in a post-quantum readiness assessment, reflecting PQ signatures implemented for transactions and its consensus mechanism. However, the network still lacks post-quantum-ready schemes for privacy features, zero-knowledge proofs, and peer-to-peer connections.
Despite the 'C' rating—which it shares with Zcash—Algorand's readiness assessment ranks above Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana, which received 'D' and 'F' ratings. Meanwhile, Dr. Joseph Kearney, technical advisor at the Quantum Resistance Ledger, noted that QRL maintains a higher volume with over 6 million post-quantum transactions.
Impact on ALGO Market Performance
The post-quantum milestone and ongoing industry focus on quantum resistance had little immediate impact on the market sentiment for Algorand's native token, ALGO, which remained neutral following a broader market pullback.
Market observers note that upcoming macroeconomic volatility and broader market trends are expected to have a greater influence on ALGO's price direction. At the time of reporting, ALGO was down 19%, with potential to drop toward $0.10 or lower if risk-off conditions deepen.
