Algorand Pauses xGov Grants, Ends Advisory Councils in Strategic Shift

Algorand is restructuring its community programs, indefinitely pausing its xGov grants initiative and concluding several advisory bodies as the foundation shifts toward a revenue-generating network model and post-quantum security. The changes were announced in a recent community update.

Community Programs Scaled Back

Effective December 6, the xGov grants program will be paused indefinitely. The program had allowed community members to submit proposals, vote, and discuss ecosystem development. The Algorand Forum will close on November 6, with a read-only archive remaining available for historical discussions. Community members will instead use Algorand’s Discord for technical updates, support, and discussions with the foundation.

The Ecosystem Advisory Council, established in January to connect community representatives with leadership and gather feedback on proposed changes, will conclude operations as a company-run body on November 6. The foundation said it still welcomes community input through Discord. Separately, Algorand will end its sponsorship of the Algorand Technical Council, though periodic Developer Council meetings will continue for technical discussions.

Staking Rewards and Project King Safety

Despite the organizational changes, the foundation reaffirmed its commitment to staking rewards through January 2028, providing continuity for node runners and stakers who help maintain network security. The update also indefinitely pauses Project King Safety as a broader roadmap initiative. Three previously discussed proposals are no longer under consideration: lifting ALGO’s maximum supply through inflation-based incentives, introducing mechanisms to capture maximum extractable value (MEV), and increasing minimum transaction fees.

However, Algorand has not ruled out every potential fee adjustment. Usage-based transaction fees, including those associated with Falcon-1024 post-quantum accounts, may still change.

Focus on Post-Quantum Security

The foundation is placing greater emphasis on post-quantum cryptography. Falcon signatures have operated on Algorand since 2022, followed by quantum-resistant transactions in 2025 and native post-quantum accounts in 2026. Its next objective involves extending these security capabilities beyond its own blockchain, with custodians, wallet providers, asset issuers, and other networks potentially integrating post-quantum protection.

The changes represent more than administrative restructuring. Algorand is reducing several community-led initiatives while concentrating resources on security infrastructure and long-term network sustainability, shifting development priorities without abandoning network incentives.
