The altcoin market cap surged by $215 billion between August 19 and 22, recording a gain of more than 24% over a three-day period and pushing the Total2 metric back above the $1 trillion threshold. Key market indicators, however, suggest that a full altseason remains unconfirmed.
The rally followed a White House meeting on August 19 between President Donald Trump and crypto executives. During the gathering, Trump urged Congress to pass a fair version of the CLARITY Act and stated that a sizable government Bitcoin purchase had been discussed. Following the remarks, Bitcoin broke above $70,000 for the first time since June, while altcoins moved at an even faster pace.
According to analyst Darkfost, mid and small-cap assets led the advance, helping to reverse a dormancy phase that began in November. During that previous stretch, roughly 80% to 85% of altcoins on Binance traded below their 200-day moving average. Data now shows that more than half of the altcoins available on Binance are trading above their 200-day moving average, signaling a regime shift.
Darkfost noted that historical gains of this scale serve as an intermediate signal of an early-stage altseason, though he cautioned that the market has entered overbought territory and may require a short-term breather. Following the initial surge, the broader crypto market has since cooled, with the global market cap declining by 5.51% over a 24-hour period to $2.57 trillion.
Broader market indicators also urge caution regarding a confirmed altseason. Bitcoin dominance stood at 59.69% on August 23 according to TradingView, remaining above the 58% level that traders historically watch for a broader market rotation into low-cap altcoins. Analyst Ash Crypto noted that while market structure is improving, further confirmation is required.
Additionally, the Altcoin Season Index currently stands at 49, indicating that fewer than half of the top-performing altcoins are outperforming Bitcoin over the measured period. A confirmed altseason typically requires the index to reach 75, meaning at least 75% of tracked altcoins have outperformed Bitcoin.
Market participants are now looking toward the Senate’s September 15 procedural vote on the CLARITY Act as the next major catalyst that could determine whether the recent rally broadens into a sustained market rotation.
