Altcoin Market Breadth Collapses from 90% to 52% on Binance

The altcoin market's recent strength has begun to fade. According to analyst Darkfost, just 51.6% of tracked Binance altcoins remained above their 200-day moving averages as of October 18, down from above 90% in early October. This sharp decline in market breadth—the proportion of assets participating in gains—suggests that price advances have become less widespread across the altcoin space.

The 200-day moving average serves as a measure of longer-term price direction. When fewer assets trade above this benchmark, it indicates that gains are concentrated among fewer tokens rather than representing broad-based strength. This metric matters because it captures participation across many assets rather than tracking individual cryptocurrency performance.

Recent Rally Weakened After Early October Peak

The reversal followed a period of rapid improvement beginning in late August. At that time, 81% of tracked altcoins traded below their 200-day averages. By September 19, roughly 70% had climbed above the benchmark, representing their strongest breadth reading since October 2025. The share continued climbing, reaching 87% by September 28 and exceeding 90% in early October.

During this upswing, altcoin market capitalization excluding Ethereum surpassed $800 billion, according to the source data. However, warning signs emerged before the recent downturn, with analyst Darkfost noting rising exchange deposits and weakening momentum. Weekly deposit transactions reached 22,700 on Binance and 8,300 on Coinbase during this period. Exchange deposits can precede sales, though they do not definitively prove that selling occurred.

Capital Flows and Market Indicators Paint Mixed Picture

Darkfost estimated that more than $814 billion entered the altcoin market during a two-month upswing, followed by over $134 billion leaving the sector in the latest 15 days. However, these figures were described as capital movements without distinguishing actual net inflows from changes in market capitalization. The distinction matters because falling valuations do not necessarily indicate equivalent withdrawals.

Other market measures suggest limited confirmation of a sustained altcoin season. CoinMarketCap's Altcoin Season Index stood at 54, below its 75-point confirmation threshold. Bitcoin dominance reached 60.1% while Bitcoin's price hovered near $81,500. BlockchainCenter's separate index likewise sat below levels associated with sustained altcoin outperformance.

Collectively, these readings establish weaker market participation rather than indicating a definitive end to the cycle. A renewed breadth recovery would require more assets to regain their long-term moving averages.
