Altcoin Rally Falters as Bitcoin Dominance Strengthens

Mixed Performance Across Altcoin Market

The altcoin market has reversed course following August's rally, with several major tokens posting losses. Ethereum fell approximately 2%, Solana dropped 4%, and XRP experienced sharper declines, despite various bullish catalysts supporting these networks.

Institutional Activity and Development Updates

Despite price weakness, institutional interest in altcoins remained active. Bitmine added 28,086 ETH to its treasury, bringing holdings to nearly 4.9% of Ethereum's supply. Spot ETH ETFs recorded $218 million in inflows during the period.

Ethereum received a technical boost with Vitalik Buterin's EIP-8141 proposal, designed to simplify stablecoin transactions by reducing the need for users to hold ETH specifically for gas fees. Solana activated its Transaction V1 upgrade to improve handling of larger and more complex DeFi transactions, while DeFi Development Corp. raised $11 million to purchase SOL.

Winners in a Weak Market

Not all altcoins declined. Tron gained 2.7% following Canary Capital's launch of TRXS, the first spot-staked TRON ETF. Aptos surged 6.4% after Bitwise filed an S-1 for a potential spot Aptos ETF. Kaspa was the strongest performer, rising 23% as its circulating supply approached 96.5% of its hard cap.

Bitcoin Dominance Signals Sustained Market Preference

The altcoin season index stood at 40, indicating the market continues to favor Bitcoin season over altcoin season. Bitcoin dominance reached 59.29%, up 0.18%, reflecting capital flows favoring BTC. Bitcoin traded at $76,751.69 and was up over 22% for the month.

BNB Chain strengthened its position in tokenized assets, holding approximately $1.267 billion in tokenized stocks, representing 44.6% of the market. Meanwhile, altcoin Open Interest surpassed Bitcoin's for the first time since December 2024, signaling aggressive leveraged positioning in altcoins despite their price weakness.
