Altcoin Rally Gains $371B Since June, But Rising Exchange Deposits Signal Caution

Altcoin markets have expanded significantly since June, with Total2—a measure of altcoin market capitalization—increasing by 45% and absorbing over $371 billion in capital. This shift reflects a rotation away from Bitcoin concentration toward a wider range of tokens.

The improvement in market breadth is evident across Binance-listed assets, where 87% are currently trading above their 200-day moving averages, compared to a substantially lower percentage a year ago. This broader participation suggests price gains are becoming more distributed across the altcoin market rather than concentrated in a few large-cap tokens.

Exchange Deposits and Potential Volatility

However, a competing signal has emerged. On September 25, approximately 70,000 altcoin deposits were recorded across exchanges—the largest volume since October 17, 2025. Major exchanges including Binance, Coinbase, Bybit, and OKX all saw increased inflows during this period.

Rising exchange deposits create a two-sided dynamic. While they enable increased trading activity, they also expand the total supply of tokens available for sale if the rally stalls or momentum reverses. If deposit volumes remain elevated, the growing inventory of tokens at higher price levels could overwhelm emerging demand.

Liquidity Concerns and Leverage Risk

The sustainability of the altcoin rally depends on underlying spot liquidity and organic demand. Stablecoin supply remains near $305 billion, indicating limited fresh capital entering the market. This raises concerns about the structure supporting the price moves.

If open interest in leveraged positions grows faster than spot trading volume, traders become increasingly dependent on borrowed exposure to sustain momentum. This arrangement can amplify selling pressure during reversals, particularly with exchange deposits at multi-month highs.

Healthier rally dynamics would show stronger spot volume paired with controlled leverage, rather than rising prices driven primarily by increasing leverage with constrained fresh capital.
