Altcoin Season Peaks as Profit-Taking Reaches Year-High Levels

The altcoin rally that drove gains throughout the third quarter has reached its peak, according to on-chain analysis. The Altcoin Season Index has entered an overheated zone, signaling a shift in market dynamics as traders lock in profits.

Since early October, altcoins have experienced sharper declines than Bitcoin. Bitcoin dropped 8% from $87,000 to briefly touch $80,000, while Ethereum fell 14% from $2,800 to below $2,500. XRP crashed 20% and Solana lost 15% of its value. Profit-taking in the altcoin segment reached a one-year high, with exchange inflow levels matching those seen during last October's market crash.

Analysts attribute the sharp pullback to a liquidity rotation back toward Bitcoin and stablecoins. As traders consolidate gains, stablecoin holdings increase while they await better entry points. Tether's USDT market dominance showed a modest uptick this week, reflecting this capital movement.

However, the broader trend suggests the altcoin sell-off may represent a pause rather than an end to the rally cycle. USDT dominance decline during the 2023 bull run coincided with significant altcoin market growth, with the altcoin market cap excluding Bitcoin and Ethereum expanding from $400 billion to over $1 trillion. If this pattern repeats, another major altcoin rally could emerge in 2025.

Some analysts see potential for near-term recovery as smaller altcoins show strength while Bitcoin consolidates, suggesting the crypto market may continue its activity in the coming period.
