Altcoin Volume Dominance Hits Two-Year High as Market Capitalization Gains $135 Billion

Altcoins captured up to 65% of trading volume on Binance during the peak of a recent crypto market rally, marking their largest volume share in two years, according to an analysis published by CryptoQuant on August 25. During the same period, bitcoin and ether held volume shares of 21% and 13.6%, respectively.

The shift followed a strong advance for bitcoin, which crossed $81,000 on August 25 after gaining nearly 30% during the broader rally. Analysts noted that bitcoin's declining share of Binance activity indicated altcoins generated substantially more trading turnover as the rally expanded. The combined market capitalization of altcoins increased by approximately $135 billion during the move.

The broader crypto market recovery added about $500 billion overall, lifting its combined capitalization to nearly $2.74 trillion during the third week of August. Several altcoins outpaced bitcoin as activity accelerated, with some tokens posting gains approaching 100% and ether rising 31.2% over a seven-day period. However, many assets remained substantially below their previous record prices.

Despite the high trading volume and market capitalization growth, market benchmarks indicated that the activity did not constitute a confirmed altcoin season. The Blockchaincenter Altcoin Season Index stood at 37 on August 26. A reading of 75 is required for the index to classify conditions as an altcoin season, which necessitates that 75% of the top 50 eligible cryptocurrencies outperform bitcoin over a 90-day period.

Regulatory bodies have highlighted various risks associated with digital asset markets. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has warned that virtual currency spot markets can experience flash crashes, manipulation, and limited oversight. Additionally, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Office of Investor Education and Advocacy has pointed to volatility, illiquidity, concentrated ownership, and limited protections regarding crypto asset securities.
