A 40% rally in Bitcoin during the third quarter has lifted the broader cryptocurrency market, driving a renewed appetite for altcoins. According to data from Glassnode, altcoins' spot trading volume has surged to four times the size of Bitcoin, marking a yearly high as spot traders shift their focus toward alternative assets.
This surge in risk appetite mirrors previous patterns in the market. Historically, heightened demand for altcoins has often aligned with local tops for Bitcoin. Similar setups occurred in early and mid-2025 based on the altcoin volume signal. The futures market also reflected strong interest in altcoins, accounting for a 41% market share in Open Interest compared to 25% for Ethereum and 35% for Bitcoin. Open Interest dominance at these levels was previously observed in December 2024 and was followed by a Bitcoin market pullback.
The Altcoin Season Index indicated that the market flipped to an altcoin season in mid-September. During the same timeframe, the total altcoin market capitalization climbed to $1.2 trillion, up 20% from third-quarter lows of $1 trillion. Several tokens recorded triple-digit gains during the period, led by projects such as Pons crypto, Pump.fun, Quant, and Zcash.
Despite the positive momentum, metrics tracking exchange inflows indicate that selling pressure is rising. CryptoQuant data shows that altcoin exchange inflows, which measure tokens sent to platforms for potential dumping, spiked to levels last seen in October 2025. CryptoQuant analyst DarkFrost noted that surging altcoin inflows point to increasing selling pressure.
At the same time, stablecoin reserves—comprising USDT and USDC—slipped lower during a recent Bitcoin price drop, implying that Bitcoin accumulation continued despite the decline. While rising altcoin sell-offs historically coincide with Bitcoin local tops and point to profit-taking, analysts suggest that any altcoin pullbacks could present buying opportunities if Bitcoin manages to extend its recovery.
