Amboss demonstrates stablecoin payments over Lightning using Taproot Assets

Amboss co-founder Jesse Shrader, known online as Jestopher, has demonstrated stablecoin payments running over the Lightning Network using the Taproot Assets protocol. The demos showed USDT and USDC moving in real time across Lightning channels, with users swapping Bitcoin for stablecoin value along the way.

What Amboss actually showed

The underlying engine is Taproot Assets, a protocol that lets people issue and transfer digital assets, including stablecoins, directly on Bitcoin. The tokens ride on the Bitcoin network, move quickly across Lightning, and ultimately settle on Bitcoin’s layer one blockchain.

Lightning is a payment layer built on top of Bitcoin. It uses channels between participants so transactions can happen fast and cheap, rather than each one waiting for a block on the main chain.

Amboss has built Taproot Assets support into several of its products: Rails, RailsX, and its Payments API. Together, these tools handle self-custodial liquidity, peer-to-peer atomic swaps, and routing payments across multiple assets.

An atomic swap is a trade that either fully completes or does not happen at all. Neither side can walk off with the other’s funds halfway through, which removes the need for an escrow agent in the middle.

The Payments API is aimed at businesses. It lets them send and settle BTC, USDT, and USDC over Lightning from a single interface, so a merchant does not need separate plumbing for each asset.

How we got here

Amboss unveiled RailsX in January 2026 at the PlanB Forum in El Salvador. By late April, RailsX was available to early users. The feature supports atomic swaps between Bitcoin and Lightning-based stablecoins, labeled USDT-L and USDC-L.

Meanwhile, the Taproot Assets software itself kept getting upgrades through 2026. Those incremental releases improved SDK tooling and pushed asset channels toward mainnet readiness, covering minting and transfers.

What this means for Bitcoin and stablecoins

Self-custody is a central theme. Amboss has leaned hard on the idea that users should control their own funds and that intermediaries should be cut out where possible.

There is also a broader industry tailwind. Lightning Labs and Tether have both shown ongoing interest in Bitcoin-native stablecoins, suggesting Amboss is not building in isolation. Tether’s involvement is significant given that USDT is one of the stablecoins featured in the demo.

Liquidity is the likely bottleneck. Lightning payments depend on channels having enough funds on the right side to route a transaction, and adding multiple assets makes that balancing act more complex. Amboss’s multi-asset routing is designed to address exactly that problem.

With RailsX in early users’ hands, the Payments API supporting three assets, and live USDT and USDC transfers on display, Amboss has moved the idea from whiteboard to working product.
