Cryptocurrency analyst Ran Neuer has outlined a thesis suggesting altcoins could significantly outperform Bitcoin in the coming market cycle, driven by the emergence of AI agents as primary participants in on-chain trading activity.
Neuer's analysis begins with Bitcoin's historical returns across cycles. The first Bitcoin cycle delivered approximately 100x returns, the next cycle produced around 15-18x, and the most recent completed cycle delivered 6-7x returns. Based on this declining pattern, Neuer expects Bitcoin's next move to reach approximately 2x to 3x gains from current levels, potentially reaching $200,000 to $250,000.
Altcoin Outperformance Projection
Neuer's central thesis rests on comparing altcoins excluding the top 10 by market cap against Bitcoin's price performance. He notes this ratio has shown a slight long-term uptrend despite two significant boom-and-bust cycles in 2017 and during DeFi Summer. According to Neuer's analysis, this ratio currently sits near the bottom of its historical channel, suggesting potential for altcoins to outperform Bitcoin by roughly 7x this cycle.
Multiplying his 2x Bitcoin estimate by the projected 7x altcoin outperformance yields his 14x altcoin projection. Neuer acknowledged this projection sounds aggressive but noted that similar outperformance ratios of 5x and 7x have occurred in prior cycles.
The AI Agent Catalyst
Neuer attributes his conviction to a broader trend toward 24/7, globally settled trading. He projects approximately 100 billion AI agents will operate on-chain at frequencies no human trader could match. These agents will require blockchain infrastructure to settle transactions, and the resulting fees will flow to crypto-related protocols, potentially benefiting altcoins disproportionately over Bitcoin.
Neuer has indicated he plans to discuss this thesis in further detail with fellow analyst Raoul Pal in an upcoming conversation.
