Crypto analyst Matthew Hyland has proposed that Bitcoin's current market cycle will extend to 2028 rather than following the traditional four-year pattern, based on the observation that recent bearish macroeconomic conditions have lasted significantly longer than in previous cycles.
The Eight-Year Cycle Theory
Hyland's analysis notes that bearish macroeconomic conditions from 2022 to 2026 lasted twice as long as the 2014-2016 and 2018-2020 periods. According to his theory, Bitcoin's cycle follows macroeconomic conditions, suggesting the current cycle has similarly doubled in length to eight years rather than consisting of two stacked four-year cycles.
On this timeline, Hyland calculated that the July 1 low occurred at month 44 of the cycle, leaving approximately 52 months remaining before a potential peak.
Price Targets and Market Patterns
Hyland expects Bitcoin to exceed $250,000 during this cycle. He argues that a subsequent 70% bear market would require a peak of $350,000 or higher to generate the necessary decline magnitude.
The analyst cited Bitcoin's rise from approximately $69,000 to $125,000 as evidence the cycle retains significant upside potential. He also pointed to elevated Bitcoin dominance at over 57% of the total crypto market, combined with altcoin dominance near historical lows, as patterns consistent with those observed in 2016 and 2020.
Current Market Conditions
Bitcoin was trading near $82,000 at the time of the analysis, down 4.5% over two weeks but up 8% over 30 days. The cryptocurrency was approximately 35% below its recent record of over $126,000.
