Andreessen Horowitz Rebrands Crypto Arm as a16z Frontier, Expands Focus to AI and Emerging Tech

Andreessen Horowitz is renaming its dedicated cryptocurrency investment arm as a16z Frontier, dropping the word “crypto” from its branding as it expands its focus to artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. The change was announced Thursday by Chris Dixon, the longtime head of a16z Crypto.

The firm stressed that the move does not signal an exit from digital assets. “Today we’re announcing that we’re expanding the scope of our new fund beyond crypto startups to the broader category of frontier startups: companies building new technologies and creating markets that may take years to develop,” Dixon wrote. “This is an expansion: We will continue to invest in crypto and related ventures and advocate for sensible crypto regulation.”

A $9.8 Billion Crypto Investment History

Andreessen Horowitz first backed Coinbase in 2013 and established its dedicated a16z Crypto fund in 2018 with $350 million in capital. Since then, the firm has raised approximately $9.8 billion across five dedicated cryptocurrency funds, making it one of the sector’s largest venture capital investors. That figure represents capital raised for investment rather than money necessarily deployed into companies.

Its fundraising efforts included a $515 million second crypto fund in 2020, a $2.2 billion third fund in 2021, a $4.5 billion fourth fund in 2022, and a $2.2 billion fifth fund announced in May 2026.

Beyond Coinbase, Andreessen Horowitz has backed cryptocurrency companies and projects including Solana, Uniswap, OpenSea, Anchorage Digital, Alchemy, Avalanche, Optimism, and Phantom. Its investment portfolio spans crypto exchanges, blockchain infrastructure, decentralized finance, digital wallets, and NFT marketplaces.

Blurring Lines Between Crypto and Tech

Dixon argued that the distinction between cryptocurrency companies and traditional technology businesses has become increasingly difficult to draw as blockchain technology spreads into mainstream finance. “When we started investing in crypto, it was a world of its own,” he wrote. “But as blockchains have become more widely used, the lines have blurred and the infrastructure has gradually receded into the background.”

Under the Frontier branding, the firm plans to pursue a broader range of long-term technology investments, particularly businesses emerging from advances in AI, autonomous machines, robotics, biotechnology, and new computing devices.

Dixon pointed to Andreessen Horowitz’s earlier investments in virtual reality company Oculus and drone startups Skydio and Zipline as examples of its history of backing technologies before they reached widespread adoption. AI will be central to the expanded investment strategy, with Dixon predicting that advances in the technology will enable entirely new products, services, and markets that have yet to be imagined.

He also argued that blockchains could become essential infrastructure for an emerging economy of autonomous AI agents, enabling machine-to-machine payments and new forms of digital coordination. “Crypto can give new networks native economic capabilities, enable machine-to-machine transactions, and create new ways to bootstrap them,” Dixon wrote.

Dixon will lead a16z Frontier alongside firm founders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, as well as general partners Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet. The firm’s existing operational support teams will continue working with portfolio companies on regulatory matters, marketing, recruiting, and technical research.

The rebranding reflects a broader bet that blockchain technology will increasingly become part of the underlying infrastructure of other industries, rather than remain a distinct investment category.
