Anthropic Warns Gas Supply Risks Could Delay or Derail $50B Data Center Plan

Anthropic has warned that natural gas supply and pricing pose significant risks to its data center expansion plans, according to its S-1 registration filing with the SEC dated October 26, 2026. The AI company, which has a $50 billion data center plan including sites in Texas and New York, disclosed that its facilities will rely on natural gas-fired generation built on site rather than drawing power purely from the grid.

Uncapped fuel costs and pipeline constraints

The filing states that gas costs are passed through to Anthropic with no caps, meaning the company bears the full impact of any price spikes. It also warns that projects could be delayed or even abandoned if the company cannot secure a firm gas supply or the pipeline capacity needed to deliver it. Anthropic further notes that viable jurisdictions for such projects are limited, and competition for resources in those areas could push costs higher.

The rise of bring-your-own-power

Anthropic’s disclosure comes amid a broader trend of AI firms and hyperscalers generating their own electricity to avoid lengthy grid interconnection queues. Energy analytics firm Cleanview estimates that behind-the-meter gas projects in development reached 110 gigawatts as of October 2026, up from just 20 gigawatts in July 2025—a more than fivefold increase in roughly 15 months. Behind-the-meter refers to power plants located on the customer’s side of the utility connection, with electricity used on site rather than flowing through the public grid.

Why the disclosure matters

The significance of Anthropic’s warning lies in the company’s decision to explicitly flag these risks to prospective investors. The uncapped pass-through structure makes fuel costs a direct variable on operating expenses, while pipeline capacity may be an even bigger constraint since gas is only useful if it can physically reach the site. Competition for limited locations with workable gas access, permitting, and land further compounds the problem, as multiple AI developers bid for the same short list of sites.

What to watch

Investors will be watching whether other AI firms and hyperscalers add similar language to their filings, which would indicate sector-wide concern about gas supply constraints. Natural gas prices themselves remain a key variable, with any supply disruption potentially rippling into the cost of running AI infrastructure. Execution risk on Anthropic’s $50 billion plan is also in focus, as the filing openly allows for the possibility that some projects get delayed or shelved as sites in Texas and New York move forward.
