Apple has quietly disclosed in its macOS 27 Golden Gate release notes that several marquee Apple Intelligence features will be subject to daily usage limits. The company released the notes on Wednesday, five days before the update becomes available on September 14.
According to Apple's documentation, "Certain Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-side models are subject to daily usage limits, including but not limited to Siri AI, Intelligent Photo Editing Tools, Image Playground, and AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts." Apple has not specified what those limits are, how frequently users would encounter them, or whether they reset daily.
The affected tools represent some of Apple's most prominent new capabilities. Intelligent Photo Editing Tools include Spatial Reframing, which repositions images after capture, and an Extend tool that broadens the frame. The natural-language shortcut builder employs AFM 3 Cloud models.
The usage restrictions reflect Apple's infrastructure reliance. The company uses Nvidia Blackwell B200 chips hosted on Google Cloud to process cloud-based Siri requests, marking a shift from commitments made at WWDC 2024 to keep such processing on Apple's own Private Cloud Compute servers. Apple made this change after a modified Google Gemini model performed inadequately on its own hardware.
At scale, inference capacity is leased through cloud providers and incurs per-query costs, creating direct economic pressure for Apple to ration its cloud-dependent features. Apple began public beta testing of the rebuilt Siri with iOS 27 in July.
The macOS 27 Golden Gate update introduces broader changes to the operating system. Siri has been rebooted around Apple Intelligence and integrated into Spotlight, allowing answers to appear in the same search interface users already employ. Siri can pull personal context from mail, messages, and photos and operates within applications on demand. A dedicated Siri app synchronizes past conversations via iCloud.
Safari now groups tabs by topic and monitors pages for price changes or restocks. The new Passwords app identifies weak or compromised credentials. Apple has also added enhanced parental controls, refreshed design elements, and expanded display support up to 5K at 120Hz.
