The Bank of Japan's October 29-30 policy meeting this week could intensify selling pressure on XRP and other cryptocurrencies, with markets bracing for potential hawkish guidance despite expectations of unchanged interest rates.
Markets currently price a 96% probability that the BOJ will hold rates steady at 1.25%, maintaining the policy level set after a 25-basis-point increase in September. However, the central bank's communication around future rate moves may have a more significant impact on asset prices than the immediate decision itself.
Inflation Signals and Future Rate Hikes
Japan's September consumer price index came in at 2.1%, exceeding the BOJ's 2% inflation target. If the bank's October Quarterly Outlook Report confirms that underlying inflation has reached or exceeded target levels, it could signal openness to another 25-basis-point rate increase at the December 17-18 meeting.
Analysts widely expect such a move if economic conditions remain supportive, potentially keeping the possibility of further tightening alive despite the anticipated October hold.
The Yen Carry Trade Connection
The BOJ's decisions carry outsized importance for cryptocurrencies due to the yen carry trade mechanism. For years, investors borrowed yen at low interest rates to fund higher-yielding assets globally, including cryptocurrencies. As Japan has raised rates, maintaining these positions has become more expensive.
Historical data shows that every BOJ rate hike since March 2024 preceded Bitcoin price declines ranging from 18% to 32%. In August 2024, an unexpected rate increase contributed to Bitcoin falling from approximately $64,000 to $49,000 within 48 hours as investors liquidated carry trade positions.
When the yen strengthens and borrowing costs rise, investors sell riskier assets to meet yen-denominated obligations. Hawkish BOJ guidance or higher inflation forecasts could strengthen the yen and trigger further carry trade unwinding.
XRP's Technical Weakness
XRP entered the BOJ meeting week in a precarious position. The token reached $1.56 on October 2 before declining steadily to $1.255 by October 18. Currently trading around $1.27, XRP is down approximately 14.5% for October, significantly steeper than Bitcoin's 4.4% monthly decline.
XRP remains roughly 65% below its cycle high of $3.65 and has posted losses approaching 30% for the year. Technical indicators suggest vulnerability, with a double-top pattern visible on its chart and the Moving Average Convergence Divergence indicator showing a sell signal.
On-chain analysis identified $1.26 as a key support level, with warnings that continued pressure could push XRP toward $0.98.
Additional Market Risk
The Federal Open Market Committee meeting on October 28 could compound market uncertainty, coming just two days before the BOJ's decision. The outcomes of both meetings could amplify price swings across the cryptocurrency market as investors reassess risk appetite.
