Base deployed Cobalt, its third significant mainnet upgrade, on Wednesday. The upgrade introduces refined transaction management capabilities alongside sophisticated asset administration features for token issuers.
Validity Transactions Enable Conditional Trading
Cobalt's centerpiece is Validity Transactions, a mechanism allowing users to queue transactions that remain dormant until specific blockchain conditions are met. A trader could set up a token swap that executes only when an asset reaches a predetermined price point within a specified timeframe. The Base network evaluates these conditions with each successive block, and the transaction expires without execution if conditions are not met.
B20 Token Standard Expanded
The Cobalt deployment significantly expands the B20 token framework, which was introduced in June. New capabilities include Composite Policies, enabling issuers to merge multiple allowlists and blocklists through Boolean logic operations. For example, an investment vehicle might require that purchasers both clear KYC verification and satisfy proprietary accreditation requirements.
Schedule Multiplier Updates provide issuers with tools to program display balance modifications, such as those occurring during equity splits. Token quantities displayed in wallets can adjust without actual minting or burning operations.
Enhanced Account Administration
Cobalt incorporates seizeWithMemo, a function granting designated administrators authority to transfer balances from holders when seizure permissions are enabled for specific assets. The action is permanently logged on-chain with explanatory documentation. Base clarified that individual issuers retain exclusive control over feature activation and administrator designation.
Strategic Direction
This upgrade continues Base's focus on tokenized financial infrastructure. In July, Base founder Jesse Pollak acknowledged the network had initially overemphasized social applications and messaging platforms, and outlined a strategic recalibration prioritizing financial utilities—particularly trading mechanisms and payment systems. In August, Coinbase introduced tokenized equity products on Base utilizing B20 standards.
Base's development roadmap includes plans to compress block times from two seconds to 200 milliseconds, integrate native smart accounts, introduce gas fee sponsorship, and enable transaction bundling.
