Basic Attention Token [BAT] broke out of a multi-month descending channel this week, briefly clearing the $0.20 resistance level. At the time of reporting, BAT traded around $0.19, up 8.5% on the daily chart and 93% over the week, with trading volume surging 120%.
The breakout triggered over $1.2 million in short position liquidations as traders covering bearish bets contributed to the rally's momentum. However, the token's retreat below $0.20 presented a new test for buyers absorbing tokens flowing onto exchanges.
Derivatives markets show record activity
BAT's rally coincided with significant growth in decentralized advertising interest and capital rotation toward altcoins with real-world adoption applications. This demand was especially evident in derivatives markets.
Open Interest surged 25% to an all-time high of $59 million, while derivatives volume climbed 340% to a record $632 million. Futures inflows reached $265.7 million compared with $255.4 million in outflows, resulting in net futures flows of roughly $10 million—a 332% increase. These figures indicated greater participation in leveraged BAT markets, though the data alone could not confirm whether traders favored long or short positions.
Exchange inflows pose absorption challenge
Following the breakout, increased amounts of BAT moved onto exchanges. On October 13, spot net inflows reached a record $2.5 million, though the reading later fell to $1.5 million while remaining positive. Positive spot net flows indicated that exchange inflows exceeded outflows, increasing available supply for potential selling without confirming that holders had already sold.
For the rally to sustain, buyers would need to absorb any selling pressure from these deposits.
Technical indicators suggest caution
BAT's Relative Strength Index rose to 85, entering overbought territory and reflecting strong recent buying momentum. The Moving Average Convergence Divergence indicator maintained an upward trajectory, supporting the bullish outlook. However, the elevated RSI left room for a pullback despite strong momentum.
If buyers successfully absorb profit-taking pressure and reclaim $0.20, BAT could target $0.28 resistance. Conversely, sustained selling could undermine the breakout and bring $0.10 into focus as a deeper downside level.
