Bermuda has chosen WalletConnect, a crypto connectivity network, to expand digital asset payments across the island. Premier Tickets, known as PTIX, will become Bermuda's first onchain merchant, with cryptocurrency payments expected to launch in the second quarter of 2027.
The integration aligns with WalletConnect Pay's support for Stellar, the blockchain Bermuda selected in May 2026 as its payment settlement rail. WalletConnect Pay began supporting Stellar merchant integrations in September 2026.
Economic Motivation
Local merchants in Bermuda currently face card processing fees ranging from 3% to 5%, with some cases reaching up to 10%. The onchain payment system aims to reduce these costs, though specific transaction fees and volumes for PTIX have not been disclosed.
PTIX as Test Case
PTIX has operated as Bermuda's primary event ticketing service since its founding in 2009, making it a logical initial merchant for the system. The move represents the first step in Bermuda's broader vision of moving digital asset activity, wages, and government fees onchain.
Bermuda's Path to Onchain Economy
The island began its legal groundwork with the Digital Asset Business Act in 2018. In January 2026, Bermuda announced a collaborative effort with Circle and Coinbase at the World Economic Forum, followed by its formal selection of Stellar as a payment rail in May 2026.
