Binance hack pushes Fear and Greed Index down to 30

The October 29 security breach at Binance resulted in losses of approximately $6.3 billion. Binance reported that it had covered and replenished about 95% of the stolen assets.

Following the incident, the Crypto Fear and Greed Index fell to 30 points, moving further into the fear zone. The index had dropped from 68 points on October 22 to 51 by October 29, and the hack coincided with a further decline. The 30‑day average of the index now stands at 56 points, below its historical median of 44 but above the lower quartile of 26.

Analyst Axel Adler Jr. noted that market sentiment was already weakening before the hack. He indicated that a sustained rise in the index, supported by price recovery, would be needed to confirm an improvement in sentiment.

Industry observers described the breach as a significant event. Bernardo Brites, co‑founder of Trace Finance, said the hack is the largest cryptocurrency theft on record, roughly four times larger than the Bybit exploit in February 2025. He suggested that as crypto prices rise and exchanges hold more assets, the scale of potential breaches could increase.

Brites also warned of a possible “flight to size,” with users potentially shifting to larger, more regulated exchanges or to self‑custody solutions, while noting that DeFi platforms also face security risks.
