Binance's $6 Billion Breach Dominates Volatile Crypto Week

Bitcoin fell toward $77,000 as news of Binance's multibillion-dollar breach emerged late Thursday, marking a significant market shock. Despite the scale of the incident, Bitcoin held up relatively well through the selloff.

Initial reports of $2.5 billion in unexplained outflows from Binance quickly escalated. Analyst Dickson Wu's reconstruction put the total loss near $6.28 billion across eight chains, with approximately $6.07 billion moving in the first 55 minutes. Binance's subsequent update estimated roughly $6.3 billion affected, with about $3 billion frozen. Exchange leadership said users would be covered.

According to Binance's initial explanation, an engineer's compromised laptop led to unauthorized withdrawals rather than leaked wallet private keys. Onchain evidence showed signed authorizations allowing attacker-controlled code to operate an Ethereum wallet. The attacker deposited stolen stablecoins into Aave and borrowed ETH against them, obtaining assets that issuers couldn't freeze. Analyst ZachXBT linked the attack to an earlier Bitget breach and suspected North Korea's Lazarus Group.

The Binance incident occurred alongside a supply-chain attack on Polymarket, a prediction market platform. Losses from that breach ranged from approximately $2.2 million to $2.73 million.

Institutional Adoption Accelerates Despite Security Concerns

Hyperliquid attracted significant institutional attention this week. ICE, the parent company of the NYSE, and Trade.xyz announced plans for U.S. perpetual-futures markets built on Hyperliquid, pending regulatory approval. Investor Stan Druckenmiller made his social media debut with an endorsement of the U.S. Hyperliquid platform. Kraken parent Payward is also pursuing its own U.S. perpetual markets using the permissioned HIP-3 framework.

Tokenized equities drew comparable institutional interest. The SEC's five-year conditional exemption allows issuers a 30-day objection window when an unaffiliated venue proposes tokenizing their shares. A full-page Wall Street Journal advertisement urged companies to oppose tokenization by opting out, while Securitize responded with its own advertisement.

Multiple Security Failures Across Custody Models

Beyond Binance, the week saw security breaches affecting both custodial and self-custody solutions. Hardware wallet maker Keystone disclosed a leak of customer names, shipping addresses, and order information, followed by theft of a factory device-authentication key that could allow counterfeit devices to pass authenticity checks. Keystone stated that wallet private keys and recovery phrases were not exposed.

Bitcoin treasury company Datavault AI's shares collapsed after disclosing it couldn't withdraw its bitcoin, which had been stuck at Biconomy since June. Indonesia's exchange Indodax suspended withdrawals, citing precautionary measures.

A breach at GMO saw attackers manipulating customer trading accounts rather than simply emptying wallets, with unauthorized trades and extortion threats reported.

Market Movements and Policy Developments

U.S. stocks climbed despite a record one-day drop in Alphabet that dragged the Nasdaq lower on Thursday. The 10-year Treasury yield ended roughly flat near 5% after the Federal Reserve held rates. Oil stayed above $100 a barrel, and gold was essentially unchanged near $4,020 an ounce.

In policy, Christine Lagarde announced her departure from the ECB, effective February 7, 2027. Ripple hosted Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent at its Swell event.

Concerns about AI's competitive draw on capital intensified, with Anthropic reportedly targeting a $100 billion raise at a $1.5 to $2 trillion valuation and a listing expected November 20.
