Binance’s fines and hack losses may equal over half of its estimated 2021‑2025 pre‑tax profit

Analysts estimate Binance’s combined fines and hack‑related losses total about $10.7 billion, roughly 56% of its projected pre‑tax profit for 2021‑2025, raising questions about its expansion capacity.

Binance’s fines and hack losses may equal over half of its estimated 2021‑2025 pre‑tax profit

Research from K33 Research estimates that Binance’s pre‑tax profit for the period 2021‑2025 could be about $19.2 billion. The same analysis notes that the exchange’s known fines and hack‑related losses total roughly $10.7 billion, which would represent about 56 % of that profit estimate.

Fines and hack losses

Binance has paid $4.34 billion in fines that are publicly documented. These include a $4.32 billion settlement with U.S. authorities in 2023 and smaller penalties in other jurisdictions, such as a $6.9 million fine in Australia and a $750 000 fine in Turkey.

The exchange also reports losses from two major hacks: a recent hack in October 2023 that resulted in a $6.34 billion shortfall, and a 2019 incident that cost 7,000 BTC (about $41 million at the time). Together, the hack‑related losses amount to approximately $6.38 billion. About $3 billion of the stolen assets from the October hack have been frozen, and recovery efforts are ongoing.

Impact on Binance’s finances

Binance used part of its SAFU emergency fund – 7,500 BTC – to cover roughly 9 % of the recent losses. The combined cost of fines and hacks now stands at $10.7 billion, which, if the profit estimate is accurate, would consume more than half of the exchange’s projected pre‑tax earnings for the 2021‑2025 period.

Public financial statements for Binance are not available, so the figures are based on external estimates and publicly disclosed penalty amounts.

Potential effect on growth plans

Following the October hack, Binance’s tracked assets fell by more than 11 % to about $128.3 billion, reflecting both market price movements and the impact of the stolen funds. The exchange has reported that about 95 % of the affected assets have been covered and that withdrawals have resumed.

Analysts note that the need to allocate resources to manage the fallout could limit Binance’s ability to fund expansion, especially as competitors such as Coinbase, Kraken and OKX continue to invest heavily in growth.

Outstanding questions

  • When and how much of the frozen assets will be recovered.
  • When Binance will replenish its SAFU fund.
  • The outcome of Binance’s proof‑of‑reserves audit scheduled for early November.
