Binance's security team intervened to stop a malicious governance proposal targeting an unnamed DAO's treasury with less than 48 hours remaining before execution. The proposal aimed to drain approximately $1.2 million, but the community ultimately voted it down, resulting in no loss of funds.
The incident was detected on August 18, 2026, and marks the second major governance-targeted attack on a decentralized autonomous organization in two months. It follows a July 2026 attack on BonkDAO that resulted in approximately $20 million in losses using a similar playbook.
How the Intervention Unfolded
Binance’s internal monitoring systems identified the suspicious proposal and alerted the affected project's team. The exchange then coordinated with other centralized platforms to freeze deposits tied to the DAO’s tokens as a precautionary measure. This cross-platform coordination provided the DAO's community with enough time to mobilize token holders and vote against the proposal before any funds could be moved.
Binance Chief Security Officer Jimmy Su noted that growing risks in the crypto space are increasingly focused on human behaviors and access rather than platform-specific code vulnerabilities. Because DAO governance systems execute approved proposals automatically on-chain, they rely on good-faith participation, which bad actors have learned to exploit.
Low voter turnout frequently enables these attacks, as malicious actors do not need a massive stake to push through a proposal if only a small fraction of token holders participate.
