BitBox has integrated Lightning Network functionality into its mobile application, allowing hardware wallet owners to conduct everyday Bitcoin transactions on Layer 2 without generating a new recovery phrase.
Users of any BitBox hardware wallet can now create a Lightning hot wallet within the BitBoxApp. The wallet can be funded directly from an on-chain balance and supports paying invoices without switching between applications or relying on third-party services, according to an announcement made Tuesday.
The Lightning wallet is derived from the existing BitBox backup, meaning users do not need to manage separate recovery credentials. The two wallets remain functionally distinct, with the Lightning wallet operating as a hot wallet designed for routine transactions while long-term holdings remain secured by the hardware device.
Within the BitBoxApp interface, users can scan and pay Lightning invoices, send and receive bitcoin, claim a Lightning address, top up from their on-chain wallet, and transfer funds back to the main balance.
The implementation uses the Breez SDK, which BitBox joins as one of more than 100 integration partners. The infrastructure handles node operation, channel management, and liquidity provisioning automatically, removing technical barriers for casual users. Custody remains with the user throughout the process.
Breez released Glow in August, a tool that provides developers visibility into Lightning wallet functionality to support building additional products on the infrastructure.
