Bitcoin and Major Cryptocurrencies Enter 'Wait and See Mode' Amid Low Volatility

Cryptocurrency markets have experienced a prolonged period of low volatility, with Bitcoin remaining within a 6% range over the past month and sitting at approximately $81,735. Meanwhile, every top-five cryptocurrency has moved less than 2% over the trailing seven-day period, and the Crypto Fear and Greed Index sits at a neutral score of 47.

While some market observers view the quiet trading conditions as dull, analysts suggest that periods of low volatility can precede significant price swings. Jake Koch-Gallup, senior research analyst at Blockworks, noted that similar low-volatility stretches have historically led to 30% price movements in either direction within a few months.

André Dragosch, head of research at Bitwise Europe, described the quiet period as a constructive sign, noting that long stretches of uneventful trading punctuated by outsized moves are typical early indicators of a bull market. Dragosch added that Bitcoin's drawdowns in the current recovery have been less damaging than in previous cycles, while other assets like oil, semiconductor stocks, and government bonds experience elevated volatility.

Conversely, Carlos Guzman, vice president of research at GSR, expressed a different view, stating that the market's stagnation stems from a broader risk-off sentiment driven by macroeconomic factors and concerns around artificial intelligence stocks.

Market participants are largely focused on upcoming macroeconomic events, particularly the Federal Reserve's rate decision on October 28. Koch-Gallup noted that until the Fed's decision, market participants are hesitant to make large bets, keeping Bitcoin hovering near the market's economic midpoint where roughly half of invested capital is in profit and half is at a loss.

Additional catalysts on the horizon include an $11.69 billion Bitcoin options expiry on October 30, the U.S. midterms on November 3, and potential resolutions to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.

While major tokens have traded sideways, certain smaller assets have posted notable gains over the past month, including the Brave browser token BAT and the card collection marketplace Collector Crypt, demonstrating that opportunities remain for market participants willing to look beyond large-cap assets.
