Bitcoin Closes October Down 7.32%, Worst Month Since 2014

Bitcoin closed October 2026 with a 7.32% decline, delivering its worst performance for the month since 2014. The weakness marked the cryptocurrency's fourth-worst October in recorded trading history and broke a historical pattern: bitcoin recorded back-to-back October losses for the first time since 2011 and 2012.

The final week proved particularly punishing. Bitcoin traded between $76,337 and $81,840 across the seven-day period as a $6.3 billion Binance security breach on October 29 rattled markets. The $5,503 trading range represented approximately 6.7% of the weekly high.

Binance Hack Triggers Selling Pressure

The Binance breach intensified market anxiety immediately. Leveraged liquidations exceeded $1.5 billion during the initial 24-hour period following reports of the hack involving Binance hot wallets. U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds suffered approximately $643 million in net withdrawals on October 30, adding further selling pressure.

Binance pledged to cover customer losses using company resources and its Secure Asset Fund for Users. Blockchain investigators estimated approximately $3 billion in stolen assets had been frozen, though questions remained surrounding the remaining stolen assets and the timeline for restoring withdrawals.

October Reverses Historical Strength

October has historically been one of bitcoin's strongest months. Across 16 completed Octobers from 2010 through 2025, 11 finished positive with an average return of 26.1% and a median gain of 12.9%. October 2026 shattered this record: at negative 7.32%, it ranked behind only three worse October performances: 2011's 34.7% decline, 2014's 12.6% retreat, and 2012's 11.1% loss.

The contrast with recent years is stark. Bitcoin gained 40% in October 2021, advanced 28.6% in October 2023, and climbed 10.9% in October 2024. October 2025 had already finished 3.9% lower, making the back-to-back declines a 14-year rarity.

November Support Levels in Focus

Bitcoin's seven-day low of $76,337 places the $76,000 to $76,500 region as a critical technical reference for November. A break beneath that area could expose support at $75,000, followed by the $73,000 region. Reclaiming $78,000 to $80,000 would improve the near-term picture, while the $81,840 weekly high represents an obstacle for buyers.

Year to date, bitcoin is down approximately 11.2%, following a 6.3% decline in 2025.

November's Historical Precedent

Despite October's weakness, November carries a historical average return of approximately 34.9%, though that figure is heavily influenced by an extraordinary 454% advance in 2013. The median gain of 10.3% offers a more modest benchmark for the coming month.
