Longtime Bitcoin Core contributor Jon Atack has raised concerns regarding the state of bitcoin adoption in El Salvador. During a lunch in El Zonte, a region widely known as Bitcoin Beach, Atack was informed that his transaction was the first bitcoin payment the vendor had received in an entire month.
Atack, who has lived in the area since 2022, shared his experience on social media, describing the situation as practically non-existent compared to previous levels of usage. When he inquired about how other customers typically pay, the vendor stated that almost all customers now use payment cards.
When Atack offered a tip in satoshis, the worker reportedly had forgotten how to use her bitcoin app and declined, stating that usage was dead. Although Atack acknowledged that his observation was anecdotal, he noted that the vendor had worked in the area for three years and witnessed the evolution of payment methods firsthand.
The developer's remarks drew mixed reactions online. Bitcoin reporter Juan Galt commented on the underlying economic challenges, suggesting that expecting prices to rise encourages users to hoard the asset rather than spend it, which runs counter to building a circular economy. Conversely, other visitors reported that paying with bitcoin remained possible in the region, noting widespread signage indicating acceptance.
Despite the decline in everyday point-of-sale transactions, Atack reflected on the broader context, acknowledging El Salvador's pioneering role as a frontier for cryptocurrency adoption and forward-thinking legislation.
