Bitcoin has defended the roughly $81,500 cost basis of U.S. spot ETF investors twice in recent trading, even after $681 million in net ETF outflows last week and an additional $65 million shed on Monday.
The $81,500 level represents the aggregate cost basis for U.S. spot bitcoin ETF investors, according to Glassnode analysis. Bitcoin spent much of the year trading below this threshold before its May rally stalled just underneath it. The level has shifted from acting as resistance to functioning as support.
Institutional Positioning and Structural Support
The resilience around $81,500 is particularly notable given that ETF flows have recently worked against bitcoin rather than supporting it. Vugar Usi Zade, CEO of MEXC, argued that institutional capital has created a stronger structural floor regardless.
"Bitcoin is moving into a phase of institutional maturity, where the $80,000 mark has become the average cost for positions held by spot ETFs and custodial services," Zade said. If major funds accumulated heavily around this zone, declines toward $80,000 may increasingly attract buyers rather than trigger selling pressure.
Bitcoin Outperforming Broader Liquidity Backdrop
Institutional positioning is not the only constructive signal. Bitcoin Magazine analysis comparing BTC with Federal Reserve net liquidity noted that bitcoin has recently outperformed the broader liquidity backdrop, even while maintaining a longer-term relationship with it. Bitcoin has historically been highly sensitive to liquidity conditions, but recent performance suggests investor demand may be contributing more to price action than simply moving with macro liquidity shifts.
Next Support Level Under Pressure
Two successful defenses of the ETF cost basis are encouraging, particularly while ETFs are recording net redemptions. However, the $81,500 mark is not guaranteed to hold. Continued ETF withdrawals could eventually overwhelm underlying spot demand.
If support breaks, Glassnode points to $77,500 as the next major level to watch. For traders, the key question is whether bitcoin can hold the ETF cost basis while money is leaving the funds.
