Bitcoin Derivatives Surge as Open Interest Nears $58 Billion and Call Options Dominate

Bitcoin derivatives markets saw a significant increase in activity as the price of bitcoin tagged an intraday high of $79,989 on Monday, August 24, 2026. Traders piled billions into futures and options contracts while paying increasingly steep premiums to chase higher prices.

Futures Open Interest Climbs Toward $58 Billion

Exchange bitcoin open interest raced toward $58 billion following a sharp rebound from approximately $49 billion days earlier. Binance led the top derivatives exchange platforms with 144,050 BTC, valued at about $11.51 billion in open interest. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) followed with 125,950 BTC worth $10.07 billion, alongside significant holdings on MEXC, Gate, and Bybit.

Open interest grew across multiple platforms over a 24-hour period, with Binance rising 5.05%, CME gaining 3.62%, MEXC adding 4.77%, and Bitget climbing 4.62%. BingX experienced a 103.60% jump in open interest over the same timeframe to reach $1.16 billion.

Options Traders Pay Higher Premiums for Bullish Exposure

The options market showed a similar focus on upside exposure. According to data highlighted by the Kobeistler Letter on X, trading volume for call options on BlackRock’s IBIT spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund reached a record 1.58 million contracts on Wednesday and maintained volume above 1 million contracts during the following two sessions.

Call skew, which measures the relative expense of bullish options compared to downside protection, increased by 0.05 over three days. Broader bitcoin options data from Coinglass indicated that calls represented 59.37% of options open interest, totaling 294,641.17 BTC, compared to 201,606.44 BTC in puts. Calls also captured 57.50% of options volume over a 24-hour period.

Total bitcoin options open interest climbed toward $39 billion, recovering from roughly $25 billion earlier in August. Notable positions included Deribit’s Sept. 25 $70,000 call and Dec. 25 $80,000 call, alongside outstanding positions at $100,000 and $120,000.

Expiration Dates and Max Pain Levels

Deribit data placed max pain—the price level where the maximum amount of options would expire worthless—near $78,000 for August 25 before shifting toward $70,000 for the August 28 expiry. Binance recorded comparable levels near $78,000 and $70,000.

Heavy call buying can influence market dynamics as dealers hedge their risk by purchasing IBIT shares or other bitcoin-linked exposure. However, market observers note that these leveraged positions can unwind quickly if prices retreat.
