US spot Bitcoin ETF holders have returned to profitability after spending most of 2026 underwater, according to ARK Invest. The shift came as Bitcoin climbed from approximately $59,500 in early July to around $85,000 by early October, a gain of roughly 42.9%.
The average holder's cost basis is estimated between $81,722 and $82,000. Once Bitcoin traded above that range, typical ETF buyers moved into profit for the first time since January.
Outflows Reverse Into Positive Territory
Cumulative net outflows from US spot Bitcoin ETFs had reached approximately $5.8 billion by mid-July, driven by declining prices. The reversal was swift once Bitcoin began climbing.
In the week ending September 25, 2026, US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net inflows of approximately $2.4 billion, the largest weekly total since October 2025. This marked the biggest single day on September 21, when inflows hit nearly $999 million.
The flow reversal flipped total 2026 flows into positive territory, with estimates ranging from $800 million to $934 million.
Institutional Engagement and Fund Performance
BlackRock's IBIT led the category in inflows. ARK's own product, the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB), pulled in roughly $289 to $295 million during its peak week in September.
Across all funds, ETF holdings grew by approximately 88,000 BTC since July, aligning closely with the price surge.
Limited Profit Margins
With Bitcoin trading around $85,000 and the average entry point near $81,722 to $82,000, the typical holder's profit cushion remains narrow at only a few thousand dollars. The return to profitability reflects institutional engagement responding to price movements rather than a fundamental market shift.
