Bitcoin ETFs Face $618M in October Outflows as Institutional Redemptions Accelerate

US spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced significant outflows in October 2026, with investors pulling $228.6 million from the funds over the five trading days ending October 16. Month-to-date net outflows reached approximately $618 million, marking a challenging stretch for the investment products that have become a primary institutional entry point into Bitcoin.

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) led the redemptions, losing approximately $165 million during the week, including $71.8 million on October 16 alone. Fidelity's Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) also saw outflows of $10.6 million on that same day.

The most significant single-day outflow occurred on October 7, when redemptions peaked at $487.1 million. Despite the outflows, daily trading volume across the funds exceeded $2 billion on multiple occasions throughout the month.

Assets and Holdings

Since their launch in January 2024, US spot Bitcoin ETFs have accumulated approximately $56.88 billion in cumulative inflows. Total assets under management across the funds reached $104.29 billion as of mid-October, with the funds collectively holding roughly 1.276 million BTC. October's outflows represent less than 1% of total assets under management.

Market Implications

Outflows from ETF redemptions can translate into actual selling pressure in the underlying Bitcoin market, as issuers must reduce their Bitcoin holdings or cash positions when shares are redeemed. However, redemptions do not necessarily indicate a loss of institutional confidence in the asset. Such flows can reflect portfolio rebalancing, profit-taking, or shifts in allocation strategy rather than a fundamental reassessment of Bitcoin itself.

The concentration of redemptions among the largest and most institutionally oriented products highlights where exit activity has been heaviest. The sustained high trading volume alongside negative net flows indicates continued engagement with the funds as a central venue for Bitcoin exposure.
