US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded $462.7 million in weekly outflows, marking their first loss since mid-August and ending a three-week period of strong inflows.
The withdrawals occurred across all four trading sessions during the holiday-shortened week. Net outflows totaled $46.7 million on Tuesday, followed by $120.2 million Wednesday and $282.6 million Thursday before easing to $13.3 million Friday.
The reversal remains modest relative to the preceding demand. Investors had poured approximately $3.8 billion into spot Bitcoin ETFs over the previous three weeks as Bitcoin briefly rallied above $80,000.
Macro Headwinds Create Uncertainty
The shift in flows coincides with deteriorating macroeconomic conditions. US consumer prices increased 0.4% in August and 3.4% year-over-year, with the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield approaching 5% before pulling back to about 4.93% by Friday.
Rising Treasury yields increase the opportunity cost of holding Bitcoin, which generates no yield. This pressure complicates the investment thesis supporting Bitcoin demand, particularly the "debasement trade" argument that rests on investor demand for scarce assets amid persistent inflation and rising government debt.
$75,000 Support Level Under Scrutiny
Bitcoin's price action reflects the tension between these competing forces. The cryptocurrency slipped from approximately $77,000 toward $76,000, rebounded to around $79,800, then surrendered much of the advance.
Analysts identify $75,000 as an increasingly important threshold. Bitcoin moved decisively above that level in August while ETF inflows accelerated. The market may soon need to defend the same level while outflows continue.
Fed Decision Will Test Demand
The Federal Reserve is scheduled to announce its policy decision on September 15-16. The outcome will provide critical insight into whether last week's ETF withdrawals reflect temporary pre-Fed positioning or a sustained shift in investor demand.
Renewed inflows following the announcement would suggest the four-day withdrawal streak was largely tactical positioning. Continued redemptions alongside elevated Treasury yields would leave Bitcoin attempting to defend its August breakout with substantially reduced support from the buyers that helped establish it.
