Bitcoin's supply on centralized exchanges has contracted significantly, with reserves dropping to 2.67 million coins from 2.8 million since February, according to research from on-chain data firm CryptoQuant.
The decline in exchange-held bitcoin coincides with the asset trading at $83,485, up 8% over the past month following its best quarter in years. Bitcoin spent much of the first half of the year below $65,000 after declining from an October 2025 all-time high of $126,080, but momentum shifted in August.
Researchers have attributed the recent price recovery to a weakening U.S. dollar following news that the Treasury would expand liquidity-support buyback operations. This has reinvigorated the "debasement trade," where investors seek non-yield-bearing assets like bitcoin as a hedge against currency depreciation.
CryptoQuant's analysis suggests the shrinking exchange supply may reflect investors moving bitcoin into cold storage solutions rather than maintaining holdings on trading platforms. "If buying demand continues to improve while exchange supply remains low, BTC could benefit from a supply-demand imbalance, creating favorable conditions for a longer-term upward trend," the research noted.
The report highlighted that bitcoin has recovered from its lows while exchange reserves have continued declining, indicating that the supply readily available for trading is decreasing even as market conditions improve. Bitcoin remains more than 30% below its record high.
