Bitcoin Faces Correction Risks Following Flash Crash and $547 Million in Liquidations

Bitcoin faces fresh correction risks following a sharp sell-off that pushed the cryptocurrency from above $79,000 down toward $77,000. The sudden market move triggered approximately $547 million in crypto liquidations before buyers stepped back into the market. At the time of writing, Bitcoin was trading at approximately $77,291, down 0.43%.

The pullback followed a move to roughly $79,500, marking Bitcoin's highest level in months. This failed breakout and subsequent rejection have renewed concerns that the recent rally remains vulnerable to further corrections, particularly given elevated leverage levels in the market.

Analyst Perspectives on Downside Risks

Analyst P4 Provider identified $79,000 as an important resistance level after Bitcoin swept liquidity above that threshold. The analyst also cited bearish RSI divergence, rising USDT dominance, and elevated funding rates as indicators of increasing correction risk. Projected downside levels range between $77,000 and $71,000, with $70,000 noted as a deeper target if selling pressure persists. Traders were advised to use tight stop-losses and protect profits.

On-chain analyst Maartunn similarly attributed the sharp downturn to heavy positioning among traders betting on higher prices. According to Maartunn, liquidity has accumulated above the $78,300 high, while multiple clusters form a staircase down toward $68,000.

Despite the flash crash, underlying demand remains visible. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $307.45 million in net inflows on August 21, extending their inflow streak to five consecutive days and providing structural support for BTC.

Upcoming Catalysts and Macroeconomic Events

Market participants are closely monitoring several upcoming economic releases and events that could dictate Bitcoin's next major direction:

  • Q2 GDP and PCE Inflation: On August 26, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis is scheduled to release the second estimate of Q2 GDP alongside July Personal Income, Outlays, and PCE inflation data. The advance estimate previously showed the economy growing at a 1.5% annualized rate.
  • Nvidia Earnings: Nvidia will report its second-quarter results on August 26 after the U.S. market close, potentially influencing broader technology stocks and risk appetite.
  • Jackson Hole Symposium: The Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium runs from August 27 to August 29, featuring a keynote speech by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh on August 28, which could offer clues regarding the Federal Reserve's policy outlook ahead of the September FOMC meeting.

Immediate market stability depends on holding the $77,000 support area, whereas another rejection near $79,000 could expose Bitcoin to deeper support levels identified by analysts.
